Dillon Gestring, a senior forward on the Vermillion Tanagers Boys’ Basketball Team, was named the 2021 “Spirit of Su” award winner at halftime of last Saturday’s State A Boy’s Tournament championship game in Sioux Falls.
Each year the “Spirit of Su” Award is given to an outstanding senior player who exemplifies the life of SuAnne Big Crow, Pine Ridge. SuAnne was killed in a car accident on her way to the Miss Basketball Banquet in 1992.
“Spirit of Su” Award contenders are judged in the categories of outstanding athletic ability, leadership, character, sportsmanship and grade point average.
The criteria include:
1. Athletic Ability: All-State caliber. All-around ability team player. Offensive and defensive standout.
2. Sportsmanship: Ability to act in a respectful manner with officials, opponents, teammates, and fans.
3. Leadership: Handles one-self in a manner which has earned the respect of teammates, opponents and fans.
4. Character: Able to interact in a positive fashion with students and adults, displaying self-discipline, high ethics, and respectful behavior. And is also a positive role model for young people.
5. Academic Ability: Maintains a 3.0 or above on a 4.0 scale.
