The Tanager volleyball team played South Sioux City, Nebraska, last Thursday and won in five sets, 3-2.

Vermillion had a tough start as they lost the first set 17-25. The Tanagers battled back in the second to win 25-15.

The third set was a close win for Vermillion as they won by two, 26-24.

“When we have close matches, we have to stay positive and motivated to keep pushing forward and to win,” said junior Shandie Ludwig.

South Sioux City did not give up in the fourth set. The Tanagers lost 22-25 to go into the fifth and final set.

The last set remained close. Vermillion persevered to win the set 15-13 and the game 3-2.

Senior Toria Andre recorded 15 kills, 10 digs, and four blocks against the out-of-state competition.

Senior Lexi Saunders tallied 17 assists and three blocks. Senior Kennedy Pratt had 12 assists.

Senior Emily Stockwell and junior Eva Knutson each had six kills on the night. Ludwig had 18 digs.

The Tanagers will play again Thursday in Madison at 7:30 p.m.
