The Vermillion Area Swim Team had their first meet of 2021 at the Sioux Falls Invite this past weekend. Four swimmers qualified for the South Dakota State Championships at the end of the season.

Brynlee Baedke (8), Daisy Brown (7), Alex Haas (8) and Margaret Olson (7) will be joining Emma Lind (8), Nathan Barnes (13), Ayden Rosener (13) and Madelyn Rosener (13) who qualified earlier in the winter season.

“Because of COVID-19, there have been limited meets this year so to have so many swimmers qualify is amazing,” said Vermillion head coach David Lind. “Last year at the state meet, we had one of the smallest teams, but because of the performance from the swimmers, we had the highest points per swimmer. I hope that we can duplicate that at this year's meet.”

Baedke swam four events in the girls 8 & under division. She placed fifth in the 50-yard freestyle in 44.39 seconds, earned the silver in the 50 breaststroke (52.54), was fourth in the 100 individual medley (1:54.96) and placed fifth in the 100 breast (1:53.97).

Barnes placed 14th in the 50 free (29.49) and 12th in the 200 breast (3:29.30) against the 13-14 boys.

Brown swam five events in the girls 8 & under age group. Brown placed eighth in the 25 free (22.51), 10th in the 50 free (49.09), fourth in the 25 backstroke (22.03), second in the 50 back (52.05) and seventh in the 25 butterfly (26.59).

Jayde Everhart (girls 11-12) placed 32nd in the 50 free (39.76), 39th in the 100 free (1:33.68), 24th in the 50 back (46.32), 25th in the 100 back (1:36.07) and was disqualified in the 50 breast.

Alexandra Haas (girls 8 & under) earned the bronze in the 25 free (20.08), placed ninth in the 25 breast (31.63) and was disqualified in the 100 IM.

E. Lind won three events in the girls 8 & under division. She won the 25 free (17.13), 100 free (1:22.28) and the 50 back (44.45).

Rylan Moran (boys 11-12) placed 19th in the 100 free (1:49.76) and was disqualified in the 50 back and 100 breast.

“I was very proud of Rylan Moran who just joined the team in December,” said coach Lind. “Being 11 years old, Rylan doesn't have the opportunity to swim shorter events and really challenged himself with the events he swam this weekend.”

Andrew Olson (boys 8 & under) placed 13th in the 25 free and was disqualified in the 25 breast.

M. Olson placed 14th in the 25 free (25.10) and eighth in the 25 breast (31.13) against the 8 & under girls.

Frederick Terwilliger (boys 8 & under) placed 12th in the 25 free (26.44).

Theo Wittmuss (boys 13-14) was 12th in the 100 free (1:18.37) and 17th in the 100 breast (1:43.29).

“For most of these swimmers, it was their first meet experience,” said coach Lind. “Margaret, Andrew, Fred, and Rylan were all competing for the first time ever. You could tell they were all nervous, but the swims they had were great! Coach Melanie Mahowald has done a great job of getting these swimmers ready for meets by working on the fine details that you need to compete.

Vermillion’s next meet will be the State Championships for those with qualifying times. This meet will be different to accommodate social distancing protocols, so swimmers 13 years and older will compete at the end of February in Sioux Falls. Those 12 and younger will swim the following weekend in Mitchell.
