Elk Point, SD --The Huskies jumped out to a 2-0 lead and added three more in the fifth inning Monday to take down the Tanagers 5-2 in region action.

Elk Point, who as of Monday just before game time was ranked #2 in Class B by Midco Sports Network, was led defensively by Ben Swatek who threw five innings and did not give up an earned run. Swatek earned the win for the Huskies. Cole Wendel earned the save.

For the Tanagers, Jack Kratz started on the mound, and took the loss. He would strike out four in five innings of work. Offensively, Kratz would add a hit and draw a walk for the visiting team.

Overall, Vermillion would gather up seven hits in game, but two errors and other things according to Coach Tom Heisinger that didn’t help the Tanager cause.

“(Tonight) just really didn’t go our way and a lot of that stuff was self-inflicted. We were trying to get momentum and just never could find a way. Missed a couple bunts and had a couple errors,” said Heisinger.

Connor Saunders, Jake Jensen, Nick Roob and Reece Proefrock would all tally hits for Vermillion. TJ Tracy led the Tanagers offensively with two hits on the evening. Saunders added two RBI.

Heisinger said after the game, “give credit to Elk Point though, they played really well and threw a couple guys out at the plate and stole some runs from us.”

Even with the loss to a very good Elk Point club, Vermillion still is looking to finish strong and enter the post season well. Coach Heisinger said the last few games big for Vermillion.

“Our last three games are all region games, they all count, and they are huge. Kind of looking at them as must win games,” said Heisinger.

Despite the loss, Vermillion has beaten some top teams in Class B in the state and the region already, and folks have taken notice. As of Monday, May 10, Midco Sports Network moved them into the top five rankings in Class B, earning the fifth spot and tied with Dell Rapids/St. Mary’s – whom they beat at Prentis Park a week ago.

Vermillion will take on Parkston on Wednesday, May 12 at Prentis Park at 6:00pm. Next week, Vermillion will also host Bon Homme on Monday, May 17 at 5:30 p.m. and welcome Wagner/Avon/Lake Andes on Tuesday, May 18 as well.
