The Vermillion U18 Blast softball team competed in the Yankton Girls Softball Association Invitational this past weekend.
As a team, we started hitting the ball very well and took advantage of the other teams mistakes, said head coach Tagney Walters. We also had great pitching with some huge defensive plays behind them.
Jessie Ripperda and Maddie Treiber pitched for Blast throughout the tournament.
In the pool play last Saturday, Vermillion Blast went 2-1 on the day.
Blast defeated Parkston 11-4, scoring in each of the four innings played.
Vermillion went on to defeat Columbus Fire & Ice 2-1, but they fell to the Yankton Fury 18s in the following game 0-4.
In the quarterfinals, Blast topped Elk Point-Jefferson 10-2.
On Sunday, Vermillion Blast fell to the Fury 18s in the semifinals, losing 1-2. The Fury 18s went on to win the title.
We have a lot of new girls to the team this summer, so its been tough coming together, said coach Walters. But they really started connecting this weekend in Yankton.
Vermillion Blast will play in a tournament this Saturday in York, Nebraska. They are scheduled to play York Fusion at 12 p.m., Midplains Prowlers at 2:40 p.m., and the Gresham Blackbirds at 4 p.m.
