Both Tanager basketball teams played at Le Mars, Iowa, Friday night. The Vermillion girls lost 37-61, and the boys followed with a 59-45 win.
In the girls’ varsity game, the Tanagers had a slow start, falling behind 5-18 after the first quarter. The competition grew the deficit by three going into the half with Vermillion down 14-30.
The Tanagers tallied 11 points in the third but remained behind, 25-43. LeMars carried the momentum through the fourth as Vermillion lost 37-61.
Eighth-grader Kasey Hanson had the team-high 13 points, four rebounds, two assists and one steal for Vermillion. Senior Lexi Plitzuweit tallied 10 points, seven rebounds and two assists on the night.
In the boys’ varsity game, the Tanagers took a slight lead after the first, up 13-10. Vermillion increased their lead by four in the second to be up 24-17 at the half.
The Tanagers scored 20 points in the third, three more than LeMars. Vermillion held the opponents from a comeback through the fourth to remain undefeated and win 59-45.
Seniors Jakob Dobney and Dillon Gestring each had 16 points for the Tanagers. Dobney also tallied four rebounds, four assists, one block and one steal. Gestring had seven rebounds.
Senior Noah Gilbertson recorded 13 points, shooting 5-for-5 from the field and going 3-for-3 beyond the arc. Gilbertson also had four rebounds and two assists on the night.
The Tanager boys play Monday at home versus Canton at 8 p.m. The girls ended their regular season Thursday at Irene-Wakonda and will begin region play Tuesday.
