The Vermillion Post 1 baseball team hosted Elk Point-Jefferson last Tuesday. The home team lost 1-5.
“We had a really good stretch of games before Elk Point,” said head coach Tom Heisinger. “We were playing well, but Elk Point just beat us. Their pitcher did a great job keeping us off balance. It stings to lose, but it was a good reminder of what we have to do to be successful.”
Elk Point-Jefferson began with a 2-0 lead in the first inning and kept it throughout the game.
The opponents scored two more in the top of the second inning, followed by Vermillion scoring their one run in the bottom of the second.
Elk Point-Jefferson scored their final run in the fourth, and the scoreboard remained 1-5 through the last three innings. Post 1 lost, 1-5.
Vermillion had two hits and two runs on the night. EPJ recorded nine hits and three errors.
From the mound, Jacob Chaussee pitched four innings for Post 1, and Sam Ward threw three innings. Chaussee tallied four strikeouts, and Ward had two.
The winning streak for Vermillion snapped, and their record became 9-9 after the EPJ loss.
Post 1 plays again on Sunday against Hartington-Newcastle in Hartington, Nebraska, at 7 p.m.
