Vermillion girls and boys basketball played a rescheduled doubleheader Saturday at Beresford. The girls fell 32-40 to the Watchdogs, and the boys won 71-22.
The opponents in the girls’ varsity game held Vermillion to two. The Tanagers were behind 2-10 after the first quarter. Vermillion got the offense going in the second but remained down 12-22 at the half.
In the third, the Tanagers outscored the competition by seven. Vermillion was behind 28-31 with one quarter remaining.
The fourth was low-scoring as Vermillion was held to four points. Beresford scored nine to remain on top and hand Vermillion the 32-40 loss.
Senior Lexi Plitzuweit and eighth-grader Brooke Jensen each had seven points for the Tanagers. Plitzuweit had nine rebounds, four assists and one steal.
Freshman Chandler Cleveland also tallied nine rebounds with two points and one steal. Jensen recorded four rebounds.
The Vermillion boys had control from the start, outscoring the Watchdogs 19-5 in the first quarter. The Tanagers increased their lead by seven at the half, up 37-16.
Vermillion held Beresford to one point in the third quarter, pulling further ahead 56-17. In the fourth, the Tanagers outscored Beresford by 10 for the 71-22 win.
Senior Jakob Dobney tallied 24 points and two assists. Dobney shot 8-for-9 from the field, 6-for-7 in 3-pointers. Junior Jake Jensen had 12 points, eight rebounds and two steals.
The Vermillion boys play at home Monday against Canton at 8 p.m. The girls finished the regular season Thursday at Irene-Wakonda and will begin region play Tuesday.
