The Vermillion Tanagers head into the winter athletic season for gymnastics, wrestling, boys basketball, and girls basketball. As meets and games are scheduled, the coaches anticipate a successful 2019-20 season.

Boys Basketball

Head coach Jay Drake is entering his 20th year of coaching, 12th as head coach for Tanager boys basketball. The team will have two seniors this season, and begin practices December 2 before their first game December 13, a doubleheader with the girls at Bon Homme.

“We are excited for the upcoming season to get underway,” said coach Drake. “We have a good group of returners coming back that gained valuable experience last year. As always, we hope to improve as a basketball team as the season goes on and to be playing our best basketball of the year in March when the Region tournament rolls around.”

“As always, we will expect to compete at a high level with the teams on our schedule,” said coach Brooks. “We have some good returning starters but will need to add new girls to the rotation this year to help fill in what we lost. We won’t be a big team, but our team speed will be good. As we build our team chemistry over the season, we hope to be playing well when the postseason rolls around.”

Joe Delvaux will be returning as the wrestling head coach this season. The team began practicing for the season this past Monday, November 18.

This year’s state tournament in Sioux Falls will be different than years prior as it will have both classes, A and B, competing.

“It is one huge event, believe me,” said assistant coach Gary Culver. “To top it off, we have a duel-team format implemented within the individual format this year.”

The big state tournament is a 3-day event, beginning the last Thursday in February.

Cheer & Dance

Shana Cerny is the head coach of the dance team at Vermillion High School, and Linda Alvey is the head cheer coach. Alvey says Vermillion has some of the best fans in the state.

“I can’t stress enough how proud I am of our fans supporting our cheerleaders and showing their school spirit at our sporting events,” said coach Alvey. “Our fans will be seeing some new cheerleaders this basketball season and returning veteran cheerleaders. I hope they will see lots of enthusiasm, spirit, and energy.”

Both cheer and dance will perform at the home games for girls and boys basketball. Cheer also travels regions, state, and occasionally some away games during the season.

“I am looking forward for this basketball season to start,” said coach Alvey. “We have phenomenal cheerleaders, and I am so proud of their hard work, dedication, and talent that they bring to this sport. Our goal is to cheer on our boys and girls with enthusiasm, with the hopes of cheering for them on to and at state.”
