The Vermillion Post 1 Legion baseball team played at Wakefield, Nebraska, this past Tuesday. They lost a close one 1-2.
“Sometimes, all you need is one hit or a hustle play to get the momentum in your favor,” said head coach Tom Heisinger. “We saw some good pitching last night, and we had good at-bats but just couldn't get anything going.”
Wakefield scored the first run in the second inning. Post 1 scored their first in the third to tie the game 1-1.
The competition scored their second run in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead by one.
Vermillion did not get on the scoreboard throughout the sixth and seventh innings, losing 1-2.
“We have been improving all season, but like always, we can continue to get better,” said coach Heisinger. “If we have a few more consistency at the plate, scoring runs, and having productive outs, that will really get things going for us.”
Post 1 had six hits and no errors on the night. Wakefield tallied seven hits and no errors.
From the plate, Jack Kratz had one RBI and two hits for Vermillion.
On the mound, Dylan Thelen pitched the game-high 5.1 innings. He recorded 10 strikeouts and 13 first-pitch strikes.
“Throughout the season, I have liked how our kids have competed,” said coach Heisinger. “We have become tougher mentally and have done a good job of playing together as a unit.”
Post 1 will play against Hartington-Newcastle in Hartington, Nebraska, Sunday at 7 p.m.
